From Shiota's early performance work in the mid-1990s, to the development of her iconic string instillations, this book captures the enduring importance of the line - of drawing - in the formation of her practice. Chiharu Shiota is a catalogue, a monograph and the diary of an installation. It uniquely includes an illustrated journey tracking the day-by-day realisation of her commission at the Art Gallery of South Australia, 'Absence embodied' - from an empty white room to an expansive drawing in space with red wool. Notably, this commission for the Art Gallery of South Australia is the only permanent installation of her work at a major institution in the world.
