Description:

How to Grow and Care for Anthuriums

Requirements Overview:

  • Name: Commonly known as flamingo flower, botanically as Anthurium andreanum.
  • Height: Typically reaches 60–90 cm depending on variety and growing conditions.
  • Foliage: Large, glossy, often heart-shaped leaves that are deep green in color.
  • Climate: Prefers sub-tropical to tropical environments but can be grown indoors in cooler climates.
  • Soil: Requires a well-drained, airy mix with ample bark for root aeration.
  • Position: Needs good ambient light but should be protected from direct sunlight; tolerates medium shade.
  • Flowering: Features a lily-like spathe in various colors and a central spadix.
  • Feeding: Use a controlled-release fertilizer every six months.
  • Watering: Water only when the top 5 cm of the soil is dry; ensure the pot doesn't sit in water.

General Care:

  • Feed sparingly to avoid sacrificing flowers for foliage.
  • Provide adequate humidity without making the environment too wet.
  • Ensure good indirect lighting and protect from direct sunlight.
  • Regularly dust leaves with a damp cloth without using chemicals.
  • Trim away spent flower stalks and yellowing leaves as needed.

Propagation:

  • Typically, anthuriums are not grown from seed at home due to the need for specific conditions.
  • Propagation is best done by dividing the plant during repotting.

Repotting Steps:

  1. Water the plant 2–3 hours before repotting.
  2. Remove from its pot and divide into smaller plants.
  3. Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally orchid bark.
  4. Place each division in a pot that fits its roots without too much spare space.
  5. After repotting, avoid fertilizing for about 2 months.

Diseases and Pests:

  • Indoor anthuriums generally face minimal pests; however, watch out for mealybugs and aphids.
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root and crown rot.

Setting Up a Potted Anthurium on a Dining Table:

  1. Select a pot that complements your dining table’s style. Ensure the pot has proper drainage.
  2. Place the anthurium in the pot, ensuring it's at a suitable height and the soil level is correct.
  3. Consider the table's design and color scheme when choosing the anthurium variety; match or contrast the colors accordingly.
  4. Add decorative elements like moss or pebbles around the base of the plant to enhance its appearance.
  5. Position the potted anthurium at the center of the table so it can be admired from all angles. Ensure it doesn't obstruct diners' views across the table.
  6. Regularly check the plant for watering needs and maintain cleanliness to keep your dining area hygienic.
